We wanted to share a tidbit of advice since we are entering the summer season which elevates our calls for hornets, rats & snakes.
It is illegal to kill non-venomous snakes in the State of Georgia. Statistically more people are struck by a snake in the act of harassing it or attempting to kill it. If you see a snake make a decision to leave it alone or if you want it gone - call a professional to scour your yard and remove any snakes.
Here are some tips for attracting or harboring less snakes:
BRUSH & TRIMMING PILES: Remove brush piles/yard debris collections. Once the trimmings get wet or age it clumps together and make a nice firm "lid' for the snakes to crawl right under.
UNDER BUSHES: Trim bushes up at least 6 - 8 inches off the ground. Take away any potential hiding places.
GROUND COVER, LOW LYING BUSHES & IVY: Remove pine straw and substitute with mulch/pea gravel. Remove all ground cover which obstructs our view of the ground. If you have to have pine straw keep it as thin as possible. Thick pine straw makes a lid (like mentioned earlier) and creates a perfect den site.
HOLES: Fill in erosion or chipmunk holes as they appear. Snakes can't "dig holes" they are opportunistic though.
Stay safe out there!
